Secret Room

In level two, fight your way past the corilla to the part with the spinning gears. Jump onto one of the containers, then jump into the rocks above. If you time it right you'll get caught in the rock and be pulled into a secret room. Keep trying until it happens. When you are pulled in, you'll have to fight the Phantom. Once he is destroyed, climb the wall to the right to get out and continue normal play.

Change Identities

Use the debug mode cheat. Start any level that has a special stage ring. Next turn into your favorite object. As an object go to the center of a ring. Now hit B twice quickly. When you get out of the special stage you will look like that object for the rest of the level.

Debug Mode

Enter the Level Select code, then press A + START to choose your starting level. Once the action starts, press C to create an item, B to toggle between items, and A to select items.

Extra Rings in Debug Mode

Enter Debug Mode then select a stage. Next press B, A (you must have Sonic and Tails on-screen.) When your cursor changes into a ring, paste it on Tails. Repeat this process and you can gain up to 900 rings and several 1-ups.

Level Select

Different Battle Music

Just before Before you fight Robotnik in the Hydrocity Zone, act 2, the boss music will come. Keep Sonic's head under the shallow water until he is about to drown, then pop out of the water. You will hear the boss music from Sonic and Knuckles.

Easy Emeralds

To gain all the chaos emeralds, enter the Level Select code, then highlight "Special Stage" and press C + Start. After receiving the emerald, press A + Start and repeat the process until you have them all.
Alternatively, enter the Sound Test code and play sounds 2, 4, 5, 6 in order. If you did it correctly, the Emerald sound will play.

Extra Lives

To do this trick you must get to the first level of the Launch Base Zone. Set off the first alarm, stop Sonic in the middle of it, and do a Spin-Dash attack. The flybots will continue to attack, and eventually their value will increase to 10,000 points! Every five flybots will gain you a life and, if you're patient enough, you can earn up to 99 lives!

It is a strange looking object with a little Robotnik head (a machine where all the creatures appear from if you defeated a Boss). Place about ten in a row. Step on the first one until you see the score counting as if you completed the level. When you see that, step on the other buttons. You will go to the level after the level you were supposed to go to. For example: if you were in the Emerald Hill Act 1 you will now be in Chemical Plant Act 1. You can do this trick in any stage, but not in Dead Zone.

Super Sonic and Tails

Enable the "Level select" code. Use the sound test selection on the options screen. Choose sounds 4, 1, 2 and 6 (in that order) and press C after each selection. Music will confirm correct code entry. Select any starting level and collect 50 rings. Sonic or Tails will turn yellow and can run at super speed, jump twice as far, and become invincible to enemies and spikes. The total number of rings will decrease during super mode. Your character will revert to normal when the ring total reaches zero. Note: Super Sonic or Tails can still drown, be crushed, and fall into bottomless pits.

Better Super Sonic

Enable the "Level select", "Debug", and "Super Sonic" codes. Select a stage with Tails in it. Get over fifty ings, then jump. Create two teleportation boxes, spin, and hit both of them. The screen should flash. You should now be Super Sonic surrounded by stars, but will not be invincible. Get ten or more rings and jump again. Sonic will morph to a better, invincible, Super Sonic.

Super Sonic in Death Egg zone

Enable the "Level select", "Debug", and "Super Sonic" codes. Go to the Death Egg zone and turn yourself into a ring. Multiply yourself until there are 50 or more rings. Collect them and jump to become Super Sonic.

Super Sonic animation

To play the Super Sonic animation repeatedly, enable the "Level Select" code, the "Debug Mode" code, followed by the "Super Sonic" code. Go to any level, and any Act (except the single Act levels -- Death Egg, Sky Chase). Complete the Act with more than 50 rings. As the score begins to add up, press B, turn into an item, then press B again. Sonic will do the animation for turning Super Sonic and then return to normal. Press B followed by B again and he will do the same thing. You can continue to do this as long as the score continues to add up.

White Sonic

Jump out to transform into Hyper Sonic. In this mode, Sonic can run faster and jump farther than Super Sonic, but is not invincible.

Invisible Sonic

Enable the "Debug mode" code and start the game. Press B during game play to transform into an object. Repeatedly press A until you transform into a big white machine. Paste it several times until about 17 machines are created. After that, hit them. If done correctly, Sonic will be invisible.

Ashura

Enable the "Debug" code. Have Sonic become a waterfall. Place waterfalls in random places on a few screens of the first level and repeat many times. Finally, remain in one place and hold the button to continue creating waterfalls. Turn Sonic into himself again and he should emerge as Ashura, his brother. He resembles Super Sonic but has black around his eyes. Press B to turn him invisible.

Debug mode

Continuous music

Select "Options" at the title screen. At the sound test screen, select each of the following sounds in order and press C after each selection: 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4. The music from the Oil Ocean zone will play during the entire game.

No music or sound effects

Select 7F at the sound test ascreen and you will not hear any music or sound effects. To return to normal, reset the Genesis.

Faster sound test options

Go into the options screen, bring up the sound test, then press A. You will go up ten at a time, making it much easier when using the level select code.

Unlimited speed shoes

Begin game play in two player vs. mode and hit as many item boxes as possible until you get the speed shoes. Then, intentionally lose your life while you have them (getting squashed is the easiest way). You will return to the start of the level or the last Star Post that you hit, but you will now have the speed shoes in effect for the rest of the stage.

Super Sonic sign

Get all of the Chaos Emeralds and transform into Super Sonic. Try to have at least fifty rings when you finish the level. After completing the level, run off screen and wait until the end-of-level sign shows Sonic. When it does, transform into Super Sonic. The sign will show Super Sonic for one second, then show blue Sonic again.

Death Egg

While in the Death Egg, defeat the big robot, and enable the "Super Sonic", "Debug" and "Level select" codes. Start running out of the Death Egg. While running out, turn into an object, then back to Sonic. Go back to the robot room, and another robot will be there. The explosions that follow you out will follow you while you fight the robot. You can go back a few times using this technique.

Fiery Defeat in Death Egg

Enable the "Debug mode" code and make sure you can be Super Sonic. Gain enough rings so that you will be Super Sonic for quite some time. Defeat Metal Sonic and chase Robotnik and defeat him. When the Death Egg is exploding, and you are running down the shaft to exit, enter debug mode. Change back and run back inside. Robotnik will return and you can defeat him again, however you will be surrounded by fire. When you defeat him again, you will have twice the amount of fire behind when you run out. Note: when this is going on the game will be very slow and you will not actually see Sonic -- make sure you are still Super Sonic when executing this trick.

Emerald Hill music

To hear the Emerald Hill melody at the title screen, go to sound test selection in the options menu and listen to songs 1, 1, 2 and 4 in order. Then, highlight "Player Select" and press Start. You will hear the Oil Ocean music at the beginning of the first level. Reset the game, and you will hear the Emerald Hill music.

Death Egg Zone: Rings

Enable the "Level select" and "Debug" codes. Go to the Death Egg zone, turn your self into a ring, and press C to multiply yourself. Then, turn back into Sonic and collect the rings. This should keep you from dying for awhile.

Extra lives

Enable the "Debug mode" code and start a game with Sonic and Tails. Press Down + Jump (Spin Dash) then press B to turn into an object. Turn into an enemy and place him on Tails. He will still be Spin Dashing. Your points will soon double and you will get lives every second, or depending how fast, you place the enemy by pressing C. Once you have enough lives, turn back into Sonic by pressing B again. This is much faster than setting the alarm off in Launch Base Zone. Note: This works with any other Sonic game that has debug mode. More compact enemies work better than the larger ones. Use Tails as a key

Use the following trick if you are stuck or just want a huge shortcut. Play an adventure with Sonic and Tails. Whenever you find a one-way door (a door that will open from one way but not for the other), walk in the opposite direction of it so that it is just off-screen. The game will not detect the door because it is not on-screen. Make Tails go past the door off-screen with controller two. Then with controller one, move closer to the locked door. It should be open and you should be able to get past it. This could cut off up to three quarters off a long level.

Debug mode

Press Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right, C, Start, then hold A at the title screen. Continue to hold A until game play begins. Screen coordinates will appear instead of a score and the number of objects displayed will appear instead of the time remaining. Object transformation

Enable the "Level select" code. Select the "Bonus level" option on the level selection screen. Obtain the Chaos Emerald, reset the game, and repeat the process until all of them are in your possession. Allow the game to continue after obtaining the last Chaos Emerald to start in the Green Hill Zone.

Crazy Sonic

Hold A + B + C during demonstration mode for force Sonic to run into objects and act strangely. Note: This may also be done during the ending sequence after completing the Final Zone.

Bonus points

Complete Green Hill Zone 1-1 or 1-2 in 29 seconds or less to receive 50,000 bonus points.

Unlimited lives

Collect the extra life at the very bottom of Green Hill Zone - Act 3. Accumulate 100 rings to obtain another extra life. Collect a third extra life located at the top of the loop-the-loop. Intentionally lose a life and repeat the process.

Control ending sequence

Enable the "Debug mode" code. Press B when Sonic is running with the animals at the end, then turn back into Sonic. You can nowcontrol yourself.

Special Zone entrance

You can almost always have the Special Zone entrance open (the giant ring next to the sign at the end of level Acts 1 and 2) by not losing your rings. If you do lose your rings, when you pass a checkpoint, intentionally die, then continue through the level without losing any rings. This works about 80% of the time.

Get all the same color Emeralds

Enable the "Debug mode" code. While in Special Zone, transform into something then go as far left and down as possible until Sonic stops shaking. Turn back into Sonic. You will fall to a place which is spinning. Look around to find every different Emerald. Note: If you fall off this place, you will fall back to your original location. To prevent this, transform and repeat the process. This works in every Special Zone.

Star Light Zone Act 1: Secret stash

Enable the "Debug mode" code. If necessary, use the level selection menu to go to the level. Run to the first wall you find, which should have a bomb enemy. Press B button and go through the wall so that you are between two green walls. Either press B again or just fly down to find three ring boxes and an invincibility box. Note: If you use the invincibility and press B, all the sparkles will stay where they last appeared. If you press B again, you will continue the time from last time you pressed B. This lets you use invincibility whenever desired. Note: The time with invincibility will eventually run out.

Level Select

From the Options screen, press A, Down, B, Down, C, Down, A, B, Up, A, C, Up, B, C, Up. To activate, hold A and press Start for level 2, hold B and press Start for level 3, or hold C and press Start for level 4.

Launch credits

At the options menu, enter the opposite of the level select code: C, Up, B, Up, A, Up, C, B, Down, C, A, Down, B, A, Down. Complete the code correctly and the credits will start immedeately.

A Hidden Emerald

At the third level, go to the cells. Hit the middle cell. A emerald will drop. Go to the bottom and there will be an emerald waiting for you.

Bonus Stage

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Go through bridge

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Enable the "Level select" code. Play as any character and go to Marble Garden Act 1. When you startoff, you will go very fast downhill. Keep going as fast as you can until you reach the bottom of the hill. There will be a collapsible bridge at the bottom. If you go fast enough, you will go through the bridge. Note: This may require a few attempts.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Semi-homing attack

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Enable the "Level select" and "Debug mode" codes. Change into the box with the "S" on it. Jump on it and you will change into a rainbow looking Super Sonic. Press A(2) to do the technique. Press A(2), Up to go upwards, press Down to slam down on the enemy, Left to speed to the left, and Right to speed to the right. This also destroys all enemies on the screen (with the exception of Bosses).

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Hyper Knuckles unlimited

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Play as Knuckles on level 1. Find a swing, then press Left(3), Right(3), Up(3), Start, A. When the Sonic logo appears, press Down repeatedly. Go to "Sound Test", then Mushroom Hill. Find the big ring. It does not matter if it changes color or not. Find a Jack-Pully, and do the exact same thing that was done with the swing. When the Sega logo pops up, go to "Sound Test", choose any level, then hold A and press Start. Keep A held until the level begins. Now that you are in debug mode, turn Knuckles into a monitor and press C. Move him around and keep pressing C until there are a lot of monitors. Turn him to normal with B and hit all the monitors. Not only will he turn into Hyper Knuckles, but his ring points will skyrocket. Do not press A at any time or Knuckles will turn upside down and fly very high into the sky. If you hit it by accident, press A to get him down and upright again.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Play as Hyper Knuckles/Sonic or Super Tails

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Collect all the Emeralds and complete the game. Enter the secret places at beginning of Mushroom Forest (depending on the character you are playing, the locations will vary. Complete the bonus levels in the secret place (they are large rings that flash different colors. Collect 50 rings in any level, jump, and press Jump again in the air. Note: You can play as Super Sonic Super Knuckles when you collect just the Emeralds and 50 rings. When playing as Hyper Sonic/Knuckles you can use the following special moves:

Hyper Sonic: Double jump to kill everyone in the screen.
Hyper Knuckles: Glide into a wall to make it shake and kill everyone on screen
Super Tails: Let your bird followers attack

Note: Your rings are how many seconds you have to stay in Hyper or Super mode. Do not remove the cartridges from each other and play just Sonic And Knuckles or just Sonic The Hedgehog 3, as this will erase your file. You must collect all of the Super Emeralds in order to play as Super Tails or Hyper Knuckles/Sonic. You can still die by getting squished. You can have different files for different people. For example, one file for Sonic, another for Knuckles, and yet another for Tails. You cannot use your special move on Robotnic unless you play as Tails.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Red Sonic and Blue Knuckles

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge and play as Knuckles. Enable the "Debug mode" code. Play until the end with all of the Super/Hyper emeralds. When Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles resting on a giant Sonic 3 and Knuckles logo appears, press B and place an S monitor. Press B again and Knuckles will be blue. Break the monitor, and the Sonic on the logo will turn red and flash white, like Super Knuckles.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Blue Knuckles

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Enable the "Debug mode" and "Level select" codes. Select Sonic and go to The Sky Sanctuary Act 2. Defeat Metal Sonic with Hyper on. Once defeated, you will see a Blue Knuckles in the ending.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Knuckles in events

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. On some levels you can see Knuckles in an event. Enable the "Debug mode" code. As Sonic, when an event happens with Knuckles turn into an object and go out of reach of the event. Change back into Sonic and you can play the level with the following effects: Sonic will sometimes get Knuckles' jumping skill; many objects will turn completely or partially red; Knuckles' theme will play; the speed up boxes have pictures of Knuckles' foot; and The 10 ring boxes have pictures of Knuckles' leg. This trick will work in Launch Base Zone Act 1, Launch Base Zone Act 2, Mushroom Hill Zone Act 1, and Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Anti-gravity Sonic

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge and enable the "Level select" and "Debug mode" codes. Start in any level, and press A while standing still. Sonic will flip upside down and be able to walk on the ceiling. If this is done on a level with no ceiling, like Sky Sanctuary, Sonic will die. This trick can also be done with Tails or Knuckles.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Hidden monitors

Select Tails and go to the Hidden Palace Zone (Lava Reef Zone Act 4). Just before you get transported up to fight Knuckles, fly up just before the spike and there should be a group of monitors. Note: You must fly quickly and be up at the wall for this to work -- just before you get up there, Tails falls.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Easy Rings

Insert Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Enable the "Level select" and "Debug mode" codes. Select Knuckles (03) and Icecap Act 1. Glide out of tunnel and land on other side. Climb to top and glide to the left. Start climbing the hill. On the steep parts, use the debug mode to help. You can get about 30 Rings in two and a half minutes.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Secret stages

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Play "1F" at the sound test screen, then highlight Special Stage one or two and press Start.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: All 14 Emeralds

Start a new file. Earn the first three Chaos Emeralds only. While in the first level, enable the "Level select" code. Go to Mushroom Hill Zone 1 and turn the Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds. Earn those three emeralds. Then go to Mushroom Hill Zone 2. Enable the "Level select" code again. Go to Special Stage 02. This level will be a new type of special stage and is easy to do. Note: If you run into an Emerald Challenge of the seven Super Emeralds, then restart. Do this a few times. You will soon get a message stating that your character has earned all the Super Emeralds. Do not let the introduction sequence or you will lose your emerald powers

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Defeating Fireball Shooter

To defeat this Boss, hit him as many times as possible before it goes behind the waterfall. At first it will be on the left side of the waterfall, next it will go up, then to the right side of the waterfall. Try to hit it any time you can. Make sure to dodge its fireballs.

Sonic 3 And Knuckles: Play as Knuckles

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Keep moving right at the character selection screen until Knuckles appears, then press Start. Note: This also changes the ending.

Sonic 2 And Knuckles: Easy lives

Insert the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 cartridge into the Sonic And Knuckles cartridge. Play as Knuckles and get to the end of Chemical Plant. There will be a wall that you can climb on. Go to the top of it. There will be an extra life there. Glide to the left you will land on another wall and find another extra life. Glide again to the left. You will land on another wall with yet another extra life.

Hidden area in Mushroom Hill Zone

Find the first pulley in the gray area of Mushroom Hill. This is the pulley leads to the Act 2 Boss. Go up the pulley on the left hand side. When you get to the top, Spindash into the spring. You will be sent up through the ceiling into a secret area with two shields. This can be done with any character. It is important that you go up on the left hand side of the pulley.

Extra points

Jump and hit the end of act marker. 100 points are awarded every time the marker is hit.

Slow motion

Pause game play during any level or act and rapidly press C. You cannot control the game while in slow motion.
